Habaj holds firm in ERC title battle

Łukasz Habaj achieved his objective of finishing Rally Islas Canarias with the lead of the FIA European Rally Championship still intact.

Habaj produced another fine drive to finish third alongside co-driver Daniel Dymurski having won the season-opening Azores Rallye in March.

It was only the Pole’s second outing on asphalt in his Sports Racing Technologies ŠKODA Fabia R5 and his capture of a podium place came after a dramatic final afternoon of position changes among the top 10.

“We’re leaving the Canary Islands on top of the leaderboard, which makes me really happy because we’re looking at the championship,” said Habaj, who took two stage bests on his way to winning leg two. “Second rally, second podium, but the most important thing is that we’re still leading the championship and we scored some good points, although today was very difficult.”

After two rounds, Habaj holds an eight-point championship lead over ERC1 Junior star Chris Ingram. Habaj stated before Rally Islas Canarias that he wanted to carry the number 1 on his car during Rally Liepāja, home event of his Sports Racing Technologies team.
